Build the concept. Miss Moffett’s Mystical Cupcakes are created from scratch with the freshest ingredients in more than 250 delectable flavors, as well as in gluten-free, vegan, sugar-free and paleo varieties. Bakers and decorators — Cupcake Magicians — whip up fresh, high-quality treats while dynamic customer-service teams provide consumer care at three locations. The team also offers special-order and wedding cakes, caters events, provides delivery and setup, and operates a growing wholesale business.

Plan the strategy. Miss Moffett’s was inspired by the baking magic of the founder’s great-grandmother, whose homemade cupcakes left a legacy of fond family memories. But it is dedicated to its customers, including a target audience of women ages 30-45 who are too busy to bake but want to feed their families the highest quality food — not something made from a boxed mix or purchased at a grocery store. Miss Moffett’s offers them items of uncompromising freshness  — always light and fluffy, never too sweet or greasy — backed by caring customer service.

Grow the revenue. Young is a “certified baking addict” who is passionate about creating flavors and tweaking recipes until they are as close to perfect as humanly possible. Mentoring from the Thurston County Economic Development Council, which she calls invaluable, spurred her business growth by helping her mix business acumen with her baking talent and personal commitment to building a talented team.

Miss Moffett’s was propelled forward during 2013 when Young was a contestant on Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars.” In part as a result of that publicity about her commitment to quality, Miss Moffett’s was named the 2014 Best New Business of the Year by the Thurston County Economic Development Council and was listed among the 2015 Puget Sound Business Examiner’s 40 Under 40. Young also speaks to female entrepreneurs about her business experience, inspiring them to take action to make their dreams a reality.

Miss Moffett’s newest location, an important growth-initiative partnership with Elle’s Floral Design, is a wedding hub and party center that hosts meetings and parties, and also provides customers with quality consulting about wedding and specialty cakes, cupcakes and floral needs.

Young believes serving her community is a key to success. In addition to speaking engagements, Miss Moffett’s is among North Thurston School District Partners in Education, which contribute money and volunteer time to help students achieve in school and beyond. The company also works with the United Way Women’s Leadership Council of Thurston County, which invests in service and philanthropy to help young women and girls learn how to become financially stable. In addition, Miss Moffett’s is a proud partner of the Thurston Thrives community health initiative, and is a member of the Lacey South Sound Chamber and the Thurston County Chamber.

Expand the market. Young plans to increase her wholesale clientele, create products especially for sale to government and military agencies, publish a cookbook, identify a partner who can help pack and ship cupcakes and, ultimately, franchise her business.

Insight/Hindsight. “FastTrac helped me dissect and restructure my company — something I never would have known to do on my own. As a result, the company’s profit has more than doubled!”
